The vibrant truth about being real

We are creative people. You and I.

We make things. Some of us take photos, design logos, dance, write songs, track records, build websites, craft leathergoods, and the list goes on. We are makers of art. We are creators of what moves people. And that is a beautiful privilege. However…

If we are honest, we are fake sometimes. We all occasionally get stuck in the fearful mud of inadequacy.

None of us like admitting that we don’t have our stuff together. But for real people…none of us do. When you think about it, it’s the most refreshing reality that we all have in common. Just like the art we make, we are imperfect. So why are we so afraid to admit this?

The more I create the more I realize that it is my inabilities just as much, if not more, than my abilities as a designer and musician that propel me forward and challenge me to grow as an artist. And it isn’t the end goal we all want anyway. Why do we crave the next project as soon as we finish the current one? We want the journey.

I think it’s high time we all start being a bit more transparent and owning the fact that we don’t have it all figured out. Because we don’t want to have it all figured out. The mystery is what makes the magic. Let’s support each other, and return our focus from perfection to the process.

The process is the purest part of what we do. No matter how imperfect it is.

So cheers to being incapable, inadequate and underestimated. Here’s to being artists.
